Celsius approached UTS design students with a brief to address a hydration context for a new product in their line. The context was open for interpretation, with this project situating itself in a gym environment.
To improve conveniency and efficiency, a product-solution is required to address these issues. This requires observation and research in the gym and demographics that frequent there.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Hydration in the gym environment takes two forms. Commonly seen water bottles, and protein shakers. Initial problems saw that people brought 2 containers, one for water, and one with dry protein powder.

Hydration: “The process of replacing water to get the body back to its normal state

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Current products don’t offer enough convenience or efficiency

The focus group consisted of those who were enthusiastic about their exercise or are looking into exercising more seriously. From gathered observational research, this is the demographic most likely to be using protein shakers.

OBSERVATIONS
People who brought dry protein powder did so in a seperate container. This container was most commonly a protein shaker.
If a protein shaker was brought, a water bottle was used for drinking water during work outs.
Some carried the containers in a bag or backpack, and some carried them alone.

INTERVIEW ANSWERS
Protein shakers are hard to clean as powder gets trapped in edges of the container
Protein shakers are used outside the gym environment, after meals like snacks.
Can act as a water bottle substitute if not planning on taking supplements.
Juggling multiple objects when filling the container with water after taking off the lid.

The concept heavily involved the lid of the protein shaker. A system was created to reduce spills, make cleaning easier, and carry dry protein powder.
The lid of the bottle is composed of different parts. The bottom two pieces make up the main lid, with the unique style of opening. The upper components contain the supplement powder and are removable from the main lid.
The removable container makes adding supplement easier, and doesn’t require the need for two different bottles. It is held in by magnets, and can be used while still in the lid as well. The user would remove either the lid or the container and tip it into the bottle, then add water.

Lid Mechnism

The top part of the lid revolves around the centre axis of its bottom half. It has two elements opposite eachother. One is a hemi-spherical rubber gasket that closes the channel on the bottom half of the lid. It moves along the groove to the other side to allow the channels in the top and bottom to line up to allow the flow of liquid.
This design makes cleaning easier as there are no sharp corners where supplement powder can get trapped.
